Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input

What this code means

Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input.

P0113 is a generic code: it means the same thing on every make. P0113 belongs to family P01xx — Fuel and air metering. Its page explains how to read a code and groups all its codes by part.

Intake air temperature sensor

This sensor measures the temperature of the air entering the engine, often built into the airflow sensor or placed in the intake manifold. Cold air is denser: the control unit uses the temperature to adjust fuelling and ignition timing.

Symptoms

Often almost nothing: a slightly laboured cold start, consumption a little higher. The intake air temperature sensor returns an absurd value — typically −40 °C, which corresponds to an open circuit. The control unit enriches as if it were freezing outside.

Common causes

  • Sensor connector unplugged or corroded
  • Faulty air temperature sensor — it is often built into the airflow sensor
  • Wire cut between the sensor and the control unit
  • Failed sensor ground

How to diagnose it

Read the air temperature in live data: −40 °C when it is 15 °C outside means an open circuit. Check the connector, then measure the sensor's resistance: it should vary with temperature, a few kilo-ohms cold, less when warm. Infinite resistance means a dead sensor.

If the sensor is built into the airflow sensor, that is what needs replacing.

Watch it live in Klaro

With an OBD2 adapter plugged in, these live readings show the part at work, when your car reports them:

  • Intake air temperature
  • Ambient air temperature
  • Coolant temperature

What to do

Have it checked this week. The car remains usable, but the fault will not clear itself and will fail the roadworthiness test.

Clearing a code switches the light off but repairs nothing: if the fault remains, the code comes back. Clearing a fault code yourself →

Repair cost

Sensor alone: €10 to €40. Airflow sensor with built-in temperature sensor: €60 to €250.
