The ELM327 adapter will not connect

Nine times out of ten, an adapter that “does not work” is an adapter badly chosen or badly paired. Here are the causes in the order they should be checked.

On iPhone: it is almost always the Bluetooth

iOS does not accept the classic Bluetooth serial profile (SPP) that the cheapest ELM327 adapters use. A unit sold as “Bluetooth” with no further detail, in version 2.0 or 3.0, will never connect to an iPhone, whatever the app — it will not even appear.

You need a Bluetooth Low Energy model: the product listing says “BLE”, “Bluetooth 4.0” or higher, or “iOS compatible”. If you bought an eight-euro unit without that mention, this is where it ends. See Which adapter to choose.

Ignition on?

The adapter lights up as soon as it is plugged in: the socket is powered by the battery permanently. But the control unit only answers with the ignition on — or the engine running on some vehicles. A lit LED proves nothing.

Turn the ignition on without starting, wait for the dashboard lights to go out, then start the connection.

Pairing: not always in the phone's settings

On Android with a classic Bluetooth adapter, you first pair it in the phone's Bluetooth settings — code 1234 or 0000 —, then choose it in the app. Without that step, the app cannot see it.

With a BLE adapter it is the opposite: it does not pair in the settings and does not appear there. The app finds it directly. If you tried to pair it, forget it in the settings and start again from the app.

Over Wi-Fi, connect the phone to the adapter's network (often WiFi_OBDII or V-LINK, no password). The phone loses Internet meanwhile; some then switch themselves to mobile data and drop the network — turn off the option that allows it, or switch data off for the duration of the diagnosis.

Another device already holds the connection

An adapter accepts one client at a time. A second paired phone, or another diagnostic app left open in the background, is enough to block the connection. Close the other apps, turn off Bluetooth on the other phones, unplug and replug the adapter.

The unit connects, but nothing shows

“NO DATA” or “UNABLE TO CONNECT” mean the phone is talking to the unit, but the unit is not talking to the car. Check the ignition, then that the vehicle really is OBD2: in Europe, petrol from 2001, diesel from 2004. Before that, the socket may exist without speaking the protocol.

Most ELM327s on sale are clones whose firmware implements only part of the original. Some do not handle every protocol, or drop out under load. If the unit works on another car but not yours, it is probably the clone.

The socket itself

Pin 16 of the OBD2 socket is fed through a fuse, often shared with the cigarette lighter or 12 V outlet. If the adapter does not light up at all, check that fuse. Also check the adapter is pushed fully home: on some vehicles the socket is recessed and the unit sits without making firm contact.

The protocol

Leave protocol selection on automatic. Forcing a protocol only helps on certain older vehicles that do not answer detection, and a wrong choice gives exactly the same symptoms as a dead unit.
