Fault codeP0335
SEVERECrankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction
What this code means
Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction.
P0335 is a generic code: it means the same thing on every make. P0335 belongs to family P03xx — Ignition and misfire. Its page explains how to read a code and groups all its codes by part.
Crankshaft position sensor (engine speed)
The crankshaft sensor faces a toothed wheel on the crankshaft or flywheel and counts its teeth as they pass. From that signal the control unit knows the engine speed and the exact position of the pistons: it is the reference for all ignition and injection timing.
Symptoms
Engine refusing to start although it cranks, or stalling without warning — especially when hot — then restarting after a few minutes' cooling. Rev counter at zero with the engine running. Without a crankshaft signal, the control unit knows neither when to fire nor when to inject.
Common causes
- Failing crankshaft sensor, often intermittently when hot
- Oxidised connector or cut wire, frequently near the exhaust
- Reluctor wheel fouled with swarf, damaged or shifted
- Incorrect air gap after refitting
- Less often, loom damaged by a belt or a rodent
How to diagnose it
In live data, watch the revs while cranking: it should show 150 to 300 rpm. Zero means the sensor or its wiring. Check the connector, then the sensor's resistance if it is inductive; compare cold and hot, as the fault sometimes only appears warm.
Remove the sensor and check its face is not covered in swarf, and the reluctor not damaged.
Watch it live in Klaro
With an OBD2 adapter plugged in, these live readings show the part at work, when your car reports them:
- Engine RPM
- Timing advance
What to do
Have it checked promptly. A misfire sends unburnt fuel into the exhaust and destroys the catalytic converter within a few dozen kilometres. If the light is flashing, stop driving.
Clearing a code switches the light off but repairs nothing: if the fault remains, the code comes back. Clearing a fault code yourself →
Repair cost
Sensor: €20 to €100, fitting €30 to €150 depending on access — sometimes behind the flywheel, which changes everything.
