P03xx fault codes: Ignition and misfire

This is the most serious family of the set. A misfire sends unburnt fuel into the exhaust, where it destroys the catalytic converter within a few dozen kilometres. A flashing warning light means a misfire is happening now: stop driving.

How to read this code

The letter P names the system: Powertrain. The next digit, 3, locates the fault: ignition and misfire.

These codes are generic: they mean the same thing on every make. Some manufacturer tools display them with a two-digit suffix, such as P0101-00 or P010100: the suffix refines the fault type, and the base code keeps its meaning.
