Engine Overboost Condition

What this code means

Engine Overboost Condition.

P0234 is a generic code: it means the same thing on every make. P0234 belongs to family P02xx — Injector circuit. Its page explains how to read a code and groups all its codes by part.

Turbo boost control

The control unit regulates how hard the turbo blows, through a wastegate that lets exhaust gas bypass the turbine, or through variable vanes on many diesels. A solenoid or an electric actuator moves them, and the boost sensor checks the result.

Symptoms

Limp mode with sharply limited power, often after hard acceleration; sometimes an unusual whistle from the turbo. The control unit measured boost pressure above what it tolerates and is protecting the engine.

Common causes

  • Wastegate seized shut, or its vacuum actuator leaking
  • Faulty wastegate or variable geometry control solenoid
  • Variable geometry turbo caked in carbon, on diesels
  • Boost pressure sensor reading wrongly
  • Engine remap or plug-in tuning box badly set

How to diagnose it

Engine off, move the wastegate or variable geometry linkage by hand: it should travel freely over its full range. Seized, cleaning — or turbo replacement — is needed.

Check the actuator's vacuum hoses and the solenoid, then compare the boost pressure read in live data with the real pressure on a gauge. If a tuning box has been fitted, unplug it first.

Watch it live in Klaro

With an OBD2 adapter plugged in, these live readings show the part at work, when your car reports them:

  • Intake manifold pressure
  • Barometric pressure
  • Calculated engine load

What to do

Have it checked promptly. An injection, fuel-supply or boost fault can cost power, cause misfires and eventually damage the engine or the catalytic converter. If the light is flashing or the engine is overheating, stop driving.

Clearing a code switches the light off but repairs nothing: if the fault remains, the code comes back. Clearing a fault code yourself →

Repair cost

Control solenoid: €30 to €120. Vacuum hose: a few euros. Variable geometry cleaning: €150 to €400. Turbo: €500 to over €1,500 fitted.
