Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off

What this code means

Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off.

P0741 is a generic code: it means the same thing on every make. P0741 belongs to family P07xx — Transmission. Its page explains how to read a code and groups all its codes by part.

Torque converter lock-up clutch

The torque converter links the engine to an automatic gearbox through fluid. At steady speed, a clutch locks it to avoid slipping and save fuel. The control unit engages it with a solenoid and checks that the engine speed matches the gearbox speed.

Symptoms

Engine revs staying high on the motorway as if the gearbox were slipping, higher consumption, gearbox running hot, and sometimes harsher gear changes. The control unit requested torque converter lock-up, which mechanically links engine and gearbox at steady speed, and did not get the expected drop in revs.

Common causes

  • Faulty converter lock-up solenoid, or its hydraulic passage blocked
  • Transmission fluid worn, too low or of the wrong specification
  • Worn converter clutch
  • Clogged transmission filter, starving the circuit of pressure
  • Damaged solenoid loom or connector

How to diagnose it

Start with the level and condition of the transmission fluid, following the manufacturer's procedure — often engine warm, at idle, on level ground. A fluid change with the exact specified fluid settles a share of cases when it is old.

If the code persists, the lock-up solenoid can be tested electrically; it is sometimes reachable by removing the sump. Beyond that, the converter itself means removing the gearbox.

What to do

Have it checked this week. The car remains usable, but the fault will not clear itself and will fail the roadworthiness test.

Clearing a code switches the light off but repairs nothing: if the fault remains, the code comes back. Clearing a fault code yourself →

Repair cost

Fluid change: €150 to €400. Solenoid: €100 to €400 fitted if reachable through the sump. Converter: €800 to €2,000 including gearbox removal.
