Type of fault

The signal stays within its electrical limits, but its value is not plausible: it does not match what the control unit expects given the other sensors. The sensor may be drifting with age, but it may also be faithfully measuring a real mechanical problem — a leak, a blockage, an air leak. Replacing the sensor without checking does not always clear the fault.

Fuel pressure regulation

On direct-injection petrol and common-rail diesel engines, a high-pressure pump feeds the injectors through a rail. The control unit regulates the pressure with a valve on the pump (volume or metering regulator) and/or a valve on the rail, and checks the result with the rail pressure sensor.

What you notice

Hard starting, loss of power, jerks, limp mode; the engine may stall if the pressure falls too low.

How to check it

Before blaming the high-pressure side, check the low-pressure supply: a clogged fuel filter, a weak in-tank pump or air in the diesel line cause many of these codes. Then check the regulator's connector and resistance. Look for leaks on the injector returns. Klaro's rail pressure reading shows whether the pressure follows the demand.

Have it checked this week. The car remains usable, but the fault will not clear itself and will fail the roadworthiness test.
