MODERATEFuel Level Output Circuit Malfunction
What this code means
Fuel Level Output Circuit Malfunction.
P0656 is a generic code: it means the same thing on every make. P0656 belongs to family P06xx — Control unit and output circuits. Its page explains how to read a code and groups all its codes by part.
Type of fault
The control unit has detected an electrical anomaly on this circuit without saying exactly which. Diagnosis starts with a visual check of the wiring and connector, then measuring the component — resistance, supply, ground — with a multimeter.
Fuel level sensor
The fuel level sensor, a float in the tank linked to a variable resistor, tells the gauge and the control unit how much fuel is left. The control unit uses it in particular to suspend some tests, like the EVAP leak test, when the tank is nearly empty or full.
What you notice
A fuel gauge that is wrong, jumps or stays stuck; a low-fuel warning that is unreliable.
How to check it
The sensor is usually part of the pump module in the tank; check its connector on top of the tank first. Fill up and see whether Klaro's fuel level follows. A reading that jumps as you move often points to a worn track on the resistor.
Watch it live in Klaro
With an OBD2 adapter plugged in, these live readings show the part at work, when your car reports them:
- Fuel level
What to do
Have it checked this week. The car remains usable, but the fault will not clear itself and will fail the roadworthiness test.
Clearing a code switches the light off but repairs nothing: if the fault remains, the code comes back. Clearing a fault code yourself →
