Fault codeP0522
MODERATEEngine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Low Voltage
What this code means
Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Low Voltage.
P0522 is a generic code: it means the same thing on every make. P0522 belongs to family P05xx — Idle speed and vehicle speed control. Its page explains how to read a code and groups all its codes by part.
Type of fault
The control unit reads a voltage on this circuit below its expected range. Usual causes: a wire shorted to ground or broken, a corroded or loose connector, or the component itself. Check the wiring and connector before replacing the part — that is where many of these faults turn out to be.
Engine oil pressure sensor
This sensor or switch measures the pressure in the engine's lubrication circuit. It lights the oil warning and, on some engines, lets the control unit control a variable-flow oil pump or protect the engine.
What you notice
An oil pressure warning that comes on, flickers, or does not light at all with ignition on.
How to check it
Check the oil level immediately: if the warning lights while driving, stop the engine. If the level is fine, check the sensor's connector, often near the oil filter, and have a mechanic measure the real pressure with a gauge before blaming the sensor.
What to do
Have it checked this week. The car remains usable, but the fault will not clear itself and will fail the roadworthiness test.
Clearing a code switches the light off but repairs nothing: if the fault remains, the code comes back. Clearing a fault code yourself →
