What this code means
Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Range/Performance Problem.
P0121 is a generic code: it means the same thing on every make. P0121 belongs to family P01xx — Fuel and air metering. Its page explains how to read a code and groups all its codes by part.
Throttle and accelerator pedal position sensors
On modern cars there is no cable between the pedal and the engine: sensors in the accelerator pedal tell the control unit how far you press, and an electric motor opens the throttle, whose position is measured by two more sensors. Each position is measured twice for safety, and both signals must agree.
Symptoms
Hesitant or abrupt acceleration, erratic idle, revs climbing on their own, limp mode with limited power. The control unit compares the throttle (or pedal) position with what the other sensors say — airflow, revs — and finds a mismatch.
Common causes
- Worn throttle position sensor: resistive track scored at the idle position
- Dirty throttle body, no longer reaching its stop
- Damaged sensor connector or wiring
- Faulty accelerator pedal sensor on drive-by-wire engines
- Throttle adaptation needed after cleaning or a battery disconnection
How to diagnose it
In live data, watch the throttle position while pressing the pedal very slowly: the value should rise steadily, without jumps or drops. A gap or a dropout points to the sensor.
Clean the throttle body if it is carboned up, then run the manufacturer's adaptation procedure if your vehicle has one. Finally check the connector and the continuity of the loom.
Watch it live in Klaro
With an OBD2 adapter plugged in, these live readings show the part at work, when your car reports them:
- Throttle position
- Relative throttle position
- Absolute throttle position B
- Accelerator pedal position D
- Accelerator pedal position E
- Commanded throttle actuator
What to do
Have it checked this week. The car remains usable, but the fault will not clear itself and will fail the roadworthiness test.
Clearing a code switches the light off but repairs nothing: if the fault remains, the code comes back. Clearing a fault code yourself →
Repair cost
Throttle cleaning: €10 to €80. Position sensor alone: €30 to €100 where it is separate. Complete electronic throttle body: €150 to €500.
