What this code means
Cooling System Performance.
P2181 is a generic code: it means the same thing on every make. P2181 belongs to family P21xx — Electronic throttle and mixture. Its page explains how to read a code and groups all its codes by part.
Type of fault
The signal stays within its electrical limits, but its value is not plausible: it does not match what the control unit expects given the other sensors. The sensor may be drifting with age, but it may also be faithfully measuring a real mechanical problem — a leak, a blockage, an air leak. Replacing the sensor without checking does not always clear the fault.
Thermostat
The thermostat is a valve in the cooling circuit that stays closed while the engine is cold, so that it warms up quickly, and opens to send coolant to the radiator once operating temperature is reached, usually around 85 to 95 °C.
What you notice
A thermostat stuck open: the engine takes a long time to warm up, the heater blows lukewarm air and consumption rises in winter. Stuck closed, it is the opposite and much more serious: the engine overheats.
How to check it
In Klaro, follow the coolant temperature from a cold start: it should climb steadily and stabilise. If it struggles to pass 70 °C on the road, the thermostat is very likely stuck open. Before replacing it, check the coolant level, since an air pocket can disturb the reading.
Watch it live in Klaro
With an OBD2 adapter plugged in, these live readings show the part at work, when your car reports them:
- Coolant temperature
- Time since engine start
What to do
Have it checked this week. The car remains usable, but the fault will not clear itself and will fail the roadworthiness test.
Clearing a code switches the light off but repairs nothing: if the fault remains, the code comes back. Clearing a fault code yourself →
