MODERATETransmission Range Sensor Circuit Intermittent
What this code means
Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Intermittent.
P0709 is a generic code: it means the same thing on every make. P0709 belongs to family P07xx — Transmission. Its page explains how to read a code and groups all its codes by part.
Type of fault
The signal drops out or jumps from time to time. This is typical of a poor contact: a loose or corroded connector, or a chafed wire that touches intermittently, often triggered by vibration or heat. The fault may disappear and come back; checking the wiring with the engine running is often revealing.
Gearbox range sensor
This sensor on the gearbox reads the position of the selector shaft: P, R, N, D and the manual positions. The gearbox control unit needs it to know which gear the driver has selected.
What you notice
Wrong position shown on the dashboard, harsh engagements, the engine not starting in P or N, sometimes the gearbox in limp mode.
How to check it
Check the adjustment of the selector cable: a sensor that does not exactly match the selector position triggers these codes. Then its connector on the gearbox, exposed to water and fluid leaks.
What to do
Have it checked this week. The car remains usable, but the fault will not clear itself and will fail the roadworthiness test.
Clearing a code switches the light off but repairs nothing: if the fault remains, the code comes back. Clearing a fault code yourself →
