Cooling Fan 2 Control Circuit Malfunction

What this code means

Cooling Fan 2 Control Circuit Malfunction.

P0481 is a generic code: it means the same thing on every make. P0481 belongs to family P04xx — Emission controls. Its page explains how to read a code and groups all its codes by part.

Type of fault

The control unit has detected an electrical anomaly on this circuit without saying exactly which. Diagnosis starts with a visual check of the wiring and connector, then measuring the component — resistance, supply, ground — with a multimeter.

Cooling fan

The electric cooling fan pulls air through the radiator when the car is slow or stationary. The control unit switches it on, sometimes at several speeds, according to the coolant temperature and the air conditioning.

What you notice

The engine overheats in traffic or at idle while it stays cool on the road; the air conditioning cools poorly when stationary. A fan that runs all the time is also possible.

How to check it

With the engine warm or the air conditioning on, the fan should start. Check the fuse, the relay or the fan control module and its connector, then the motor itself. Watch the coolant temperature in Klaro: if it keeps rising past 100 °C at idle without the fan starting, stop and have it repaired.

Watch it live in Klaro

With an OBD2 adapter plugged in, these live readings show the part at work, when your car reports them:

What to do

Have it checked this week. The car remains usable, but the fault will not clear itself and will fail the roadworthiness test.

Clearing a code switches the light off but repairs nothing: if the fault remains, the code comes back. Clearing a fault code yourself →
