Fault codeP0217
SEVEREEngine Overtemp Condition
What this code means
Engine Overtemp Condition.
P0217 is a generic code: it means the same thing on every make. P0217 belongs to family P02xx — Injector circuit. Its page explains how to read a code and groups all its codes by part.
Engine protection (temperature or over-speed)
These codes do not point to a sensor: the control unit has recorded that the engine reached a dangerous condition, either a coolant temperature too high or a speed above the rev limit.
What you notice
For overheating: temperature warning, loss of power, sometimes steam from the bonnet. For over-speed: usually nothing afterwards, but the engine may have been damaged.
How to check it
For overheating, stop the engine and let it cool before opening anything, then check the coolant level, the cooling fan, the radiator and the water pump. A head gasket can be damaged by a severe overheat. Klaro's coolant temperature lets you watch the engine as it warms up and under load.
Watch it live in Klaro
With an OBD2 adapter plugged in, these live readings show the part at work, when your car reports them:
- Coolant temperature
- Engine oil temperature
- Engine RPM
What to do
Have it checked promptly. An injection, fuel-supply or boost fault can cost power, cause misfires and eventually damage the engine or the catalytic converter. If the light is flashing or the engine is overheating, stop driving.
Clearing a code switches the light off but repairs nothing: if the fault remains, the code comes back. Clearing a fault code yourself →
